It is a popular maxim in the Odia vernacular “Kari Karau thai tuhi to binu anya gati nahi” which refers to. “It is the supreme lord who alone executes everything.” He opts his own place & people and does whatever he intends.
In addition to puri, Jagannath temples are dispersed everywhere in India and even overseas as well. Delhi, the national capital territory must have also one, such an inspiration dates back to 1960. As a matter of Fact it sprouted in the conscience of the two eminent dignitaries Sh. Duryodhan Pradhan & his uncle Bhramarabar Pradhan who would reside at hauz Khas those days. A Sympalhetic episode was the catalyst in this expedition. As for the character of both of them, they were compassionate & benevolent. They never shied from assisting those who approached them.
One day a few people from Banpur a small town in Odisha reached the residence of Sh. Duryodhan Pradhan. They narrated their distressing incident how their belongings had been pilfered at the New Delhi Railway station at the time of their departure for Odisha. obviously they were not in a position to travel. They were possessing an idol in lieu of which they sought some monetary help. It was almost a barter system which he disproved instantaneously, but out of his generous behaviour he arranged for their journey to Odisha otherwise.
They were gratified so they submitted the Jagannath statue to Sh. Duryodhan Pradhan. at his home and left for Odisha. Ofcourse this phenomenon motivated both the Pradhans to accelerate their conviction. They initiated their endeavour how to get the temple constructed.
Hence Sh. Duryodhan Pradhan and Sh. Bhramarabar Pradhan along with Kalahandi Maharaj and some other trustworthy persons began their concerted effort for the construction of the temple.
A trust named Shree Neelachal Sewa Sangh (NSSS) had already been constituted in 1960 in order to volunteer their service to the society as a whole for which they got it registered in the year of 1967 on the propitious day of AKSHAY Tritiya (the third day of bright fortnight in the month of Vaishakh).
Then how to avail of an appropriate land was definitely the most significant initiative that too more or less similar to the puri temple. At last it was identified with the noble contribution of the then Lt. Governor Dr. A.N Jha & R.N. Singhdev the member of parliament.
As soon as the suitable land was demarcated, the construction started too simultaneously in 1967. Two storeyed temple was to be planned. The ground floor was to be dedicated to Mausi Maa for her adoration whereas the first one was for Bhagwan Jagannath himself. Once first floor was ultimately buit up after five years in 1971, the NSSS commenced invoking Mausi Maa. The image of Jagannath which had been gifted by those people was also placed ephemerally until the first storey was to be complete. It took seven years i.e., from 1971 to 1978 to construct the main temple for accommodating Bhagwan Jagannath.
The Pradhan & Uppal Ghosh company was entrusted with the construction& architecture.
